Privacy Policy
Masareef ("the app", "we", "us") is a personal budget tracker that lets you record your spending and income by voice or text, in Arabic or English. We built Masareef to be private by design: your financial data belongs to you, we don't show ads, and we don't track you across other apps or websites. This policy explains what we collect, why, and the choices you have.
We collect only what's needed to run the app — your account email and the transactions you create. We never sell your data, never use it for advertising, and never connect to your bank.
1. Information we collect
- Account information — your email address, used to create and sign in to your account (or your Google or Apple account identifier if you choose social sign-in). Your password is handled by our authentication provider and stored only as a secure hash; we never see it in plain text.
- Transactions you create — the amount, category, date, type (expense/income), any note, and the original text you spoke or typed (kept so the app can categorize it and show your history).
- Accounts & balances — the account names and starting balances you add (e.g. "Bank", "Cash").
- Notification token — if you enable notifications, a push token so we can alert you about pending SMS transactions.
- Bank transaction auto-capture (optional) — if you opt in, the text of a bank transaction alert is sent to our server to extract the amount and category, then saved as a pending transaction for you to review. On iOS this uses an iOS Shortcut you set up; on Android it uses notification access (see below). This feature is off by default.
Android notification access. On Android, the optional auto-capture feature uses notification access (a NotificationListenerService). It is off by default. When you enable it in Settings and choose a keyword (for example your bank's currency word), only notifications containing that keyword are read, and their text is used solely to create a pending transaction for you to review. We do not read your other notifications, and notification data is never sold or shared with third parties or used for advertising.
We do not collect your contacts, location, advertising identifiers, or analytics about how you use the app.
2. How we use your information
We use the data above only to provide the app's core features: recording, categorizing, and displaying your finances; calculating account balances; and (if you opt in) sending you notifications. We do not use your data for advertising or profiling.
3. Voice & speech
Voice entry is optional. When you use it, speech recognition happens on your device and only the resulting text is processed by the app. We do not record, upload, or store raw audio. The app requests Microphone and Speech Recognition permission solely for this optional feature.
4. AI categorization
To detect the amount and category of a purchase, the text of your entry (for example "coffee 45 pounds") is sent to a third-party AI provider, Groq, which returns a suggested category. This text is processed to generate that result and is not used by us to build advertising profiles. See Groq's privacy practices at groq.com/privacy-policy.
5. Where your data is stored
Your data is stored securely with our backend provider, Supabase (PostgreSQL hosting), protected by row-level security so that only your authenticated account can read or write your data. Data is transmitted over encrypted HTTPS connections. See Supabase's privacy practices at supabase.com/privacy.
6. Sharing
We do not sell or rent your personal data. We share data only with the service providers needed to operate the app:
- Supabase — authentication and database storage.
- Groq — AI categorization of transaction text.
- Google — sign-in (if you use it) and Android push-notification delivery (Firebase Cloud Messaging).
- Apple — sign-in (if you use it) and iOS push-notification delivery.
7. Data retention & your choices
We keep your data until you delete it or close your account. You can delete individual transactions and accounts at any time inside the app. To delete your entire account and all associated data, contact us at the email below and we will remove it.
8. Children
Masareef is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from them.
9. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. We'll revise the "Last updated" date above and, for significant changes, provide a notice in the app.
